Penguin Colony Developers Block Sales in Israel in Solidarity with Palestine

The developers behind the game Penguin Colony have actively demonstrated their stance on the ongoing conflict by blocking the game's sale in Israel. This action, taken in solidarity with Palestine, is accompanied by an explicit land acknowledgement within the game itself.

One of the game's publishers confirmed the decision in response to a query from an Israeli user on the Steam forums. The publisher stated, "While in general we seek to bring our games to as many potential players as possible, we believe strongly that developers have the right to control where their games are sold. In this case, the developer asked us to block sale in Israel. In the absence of more organized sanctions, this act is intended to demonstrate solidarity with Palestine. We fully support their decision."

This move by the Penguin Colony developers is a notable instance of direct action within the gaming industry regarding the conflict, diverging from broader industry trends of silence on the issue. Previous attempts to address the topic within the industry include an open letter from members of the now-defunct Future Class initiative to The Game Awards, which reportedly went unaddressed. Additionally, developers of the game Big Walk cited the BDS movement as the reason their game was not available for purchase on Xbox.

The developers, Origame Digital, also included an unequivocal land acknowledgement at the beginning of Penguin Colony, a practice the outlet's reviewer found impactful. The reviewer highlighted that receiving such clear statements of a developer's values directly within a game, rather than through external channels like social media, prompts personal reflection on one's own values and actions. The direct incorporation of these statements is seen as a powerful tool for encouraging introspection and potential change in how individuals engage with global issues, including consumer choices.
