Atlus is set to revitalize the nearly two-decade-old role-playing game Persona 4 with its upcoming remake, Persona 4 Revival. The latest trailer for the title offers a glimpse into the significant changes being implemented, with a particular emphasis on combat mechanics. These updates aim to modernize the gameplay for a new generation of players.
Persona 4 Revival will feature five new additions not present in the original release or its expanded Golden version. Three of these directly impact the game's turn-based combat. The first is the "Baton Pass" mechanic, a feature popularized in Persona 5. This allows players to transfer a turn to a party member upon initiating a "One More," adding strategic depth and speed to battles. This mechanic was also adapted for Persona 3 Reload, where it was known as "Shift."
Another new combat addition is "Send Flying." This occurs when a normal attack successfully inflicts a status ailment on an enemy. The afflicted enemy is then launched, dealing damage and potentially spreading its ailment to other foes. Perhaps the most striking new mechanic is "Prime Time." During combat, a dedicated meter fills, which can be activated to enter this special mode. While in Prime Time, players can execute a rapid series of attacks, with all skill costs waived, enemy resistances ignored, and Baton Pass becoming available. The mode culminates in a "Series Finale" finisher that inflicts substantial damage. This appears to be an evolution of the "All-Out Attack" from previous titles, enhanced with additional strategic elements.
The trailer also highlights two audio-centric improvements. Social Links will now be fully voiced, and there are mentions of newly added events that may provoke player interest. Furthermore, the game's score will feature a new composition by Ryota Kozuka, including remixes of existing tracks. Singer Shiori Sasaki will lend her vocals to the project.
Atlus has indicated a willingness to make notable changes in Persona 4 Revival, including modifications to certain characters. The game is scheduled for release on February 18, 2027, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
