Atlus is making some adjustments to Persona 4 Revival, with General Producer Kazuhisa Wada confirming that certain character elements will be refined to better suit a modern audience. Speaking at Anime Expo, Wada stated that while the core of the characters remains unchanged, specific "corners" have been "brushed up" to ensure appropriateness for today's world.
Wada specifically pointed to Yosuke as a character receiving minor alterations. "We haven't really changed anything about the story of the characters' thoughts or how they act," Wada told Anime Corner. "We've just ... changed the way we express some of this a little bit, mostly with Yosuke really. He's a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes. We wanted to lighten that up and make it a little more fitting for the world that we live in now."
The producer also reassured fans that the social links for characters like Kanji and Naoto will remain unaltered at their foundation. Yosuke has historically drawn criticism from some players for comments and actions perceived as insensitive, particularly towards outsiders, with some interpretations leaning towards homophobic remarks. While some view these as reflections of teenage awkwardness, others have found them problematic.
This move is not unprecedented for Atlus; Persona 3 Reload previously edited a scene considered transphobic in the original game. The development for Persona 4 Revival is made more intriguing by fan discoveries of unused dialogue and voiceovers on the original PlayStation 2 release that suggest a potential for the protagonist to pursue a romantic relationship with Yosuke. Wada confirmed that Persona 4 Revival will include new content, though the extent to which this potential romantic subplot might be explored remains unconfirmed.
