Persona 4 Revival, the upcoming remake of the beloved JRPG, will feature revised writing for the character Yosuke Hanamura to address his portrayal in the original game. Atlus general producer Kazuhisa Wada explained in an interview with Anime Corner that the team intends to make Yosuke more "fitting for the world we live in now."
Wada acknowledged that Yosuke was "a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes" in the original Persona 4, which was released over a decade ago. This insensitivity was particularly evident in his interactions with the character Kanji Tatsumi, who was heavily implied to be gay. Yosuke's lecherous behavior towards female party members was also a point of contention.
While the remake aims to modernize Yosuke's character, Wada stated that the overall story, character motivations, and actions will remain largely unchanged. The adjustments are primarily focused on Yosuke's dialogue and behavior to mitigate the dated and potentially offensive elements. The goal is to make the character less of an "asshole" as described by some players, without fundamentally altering the narrative or other characters.
Persona 4 Golden, an enhanced version of the original game, was released in 2012 for the PlayStation Vita and has since been ported to other platforms. Persona 4 Revival is slated for release next year, with the adjustments to Yosuke's character being a notable change for players familiar with the original title.
