Fans are speculating about the nature of Persona 6's mascot character, drawing inspiration from the series' history of including unique non-human party members. The initial trailer for Persona 6, revealed in June, offered a glimpse of the game's unnerving and gloomy atmosphere, contrasting with the vibrant urban settings of its predecessors. This cryptic trailer, featuring phrases like "who are you" and unsettling imagery, has fueled considerable fan discussion regarding the upcoming installment's themes and characters.

Past Persona titles have featured memorable non-human companions: Persona 3 had the android Aigis and the dog Koromaru, Persona 4 introduced the bear mascot Teddie, and Persona 5 featured the feline Morgana. These characters have consistently embodied the overarching themes of their respective games, serving as integral parts of the narrative and gameplay.

Given Persona 6's darker aesthetic, fan theories are exploring fitting mascot archetypes. While suggestions like ghosts or gargoyles have been proposed, a prominent theory posits that the mascot could be an ensouled object, such as a living doll. This idea stems from discussions within the Persona 6 subreddit, where users analyze the limited clues provided by the game's reveal.

This "living object" concept is further refined by the popular suggestion of an Alice in Wonderland-themed doll. The character Alice has been a recurring collectible demon in the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series since 1992, typically depicted with an unnerving stare and a blue dress, sometimes accompanied by a rabbit doll reminiscent of Lewis Carroll's stories. In Persona lore, Alice is a spirit driven to madness by extreme magical power, who “befriends” children by taking them to the afterlife. An Alice doll or a possessed rabbit plush could blend into the game's world more subtly than a ghost or gargoyle, while still aligning with themes of subconscious exploration often found in the series' dungeon crawling.

Alternative interpretations of the "possessed object" theory suggest more mundane items could be imbued with sentience, such as a talking umbrella or teapot. This concept draws parallels to Japanese folklore's tsukumogami, ancient objects that gain a spirit, and echoes in video games through Pokémon designs like Chandelure and Klefki. While the Alice doll theory is favored for its narrative potential, the prospect of a sentient umbrella or teapot is also viewed with amusement by some fans.

Persona 6 is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. An official release date has not yet been announced.
