The voice behind Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen, has passed away at the age of 85. Cullen lent his distinctive voice to the heroic Autobot leader for over 40 years, beginning with the original 1984 Transformers animated series and continuing through various iterations of the franchise, including Michael Bay's live-action films. His death, which occurred on August 26, has prompted heartfelt tributes from fellow voice actors who worked alongside him.

Neil Ross, who voiced multiple Autobots and Decepticons in the original series, shared his memories of Cullen, whom he knew for over four decades. "Peter Cullen was a lovely guy and a prodigious talent," Ross stated. "He was a true gentleman and one of those guys that I always looked forward to working with. He had such a great laugh — I’ll miss hearing it. He was a great talent, but always remained humble."

David Kaye, known for his roles as Megatron and Optimus Prime in various Transformers series, recalled an early encounter when he was cast as Optimus Prime in Transformers: Animated. "The next time I saw him, I apologized and he was so gracious, he said, ‘No, don’t even think about it.’" Kaye later had the opportunity to work with Cullen on Transformers: Prime, an experience he described as deeply meaningful. "Being in the same room as Peter. He had a presence — he filled the room. To me, he was like a god of voiceover."

Jess Harnell, the voice of Ironhide in the live-action Transformers films, offered a poignant tribute: "If Transformers are cars that turn into robots, Peter held the keys and owned the garage. Rest in Prime, my friend."

Garry Chalk, who voiced Optimus Primal in Beast Wars: Transformers and later took on the mantle of Optimus Prime himself in Transformers: Armada, expressed his shock at Cullen's passing. "It came as quite a shock because I thought, like his iconic characters, he’d live forever." Chalk remembered Cullen as a "personable human being and very genuinely interested in the fans," and a "quiet and humble man." He added, "He was so good at what he did. Rest in peace, Peter, you were an icon — you were loved by everyone and it’s a sad day for the Transformers community for sure."

Beyond his most famous role as Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen's extensive career spanned over 60 years and included numerous other memorable characters. He voiced Eeyore in Disney's Winnie the Pooh franchise and Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers. He also provided the chilling voice of the Predator in the 1987 film of the same name. His enduring legacy, however, remains indelibly linked to the noble leader of the Autobots.
