Peter Jackson has offered a significant update on his planned sequel to The Adventures of Tintin, confirming that the script is complete and that the project is next in line for him to direct. Jackson shared this news at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain, reiterating statements he made in May about the script's completion.
The 2011 film, The Adventures of Tintin, directed by Steven Spielberg, was intended to be the first of a trilogy. While a sequel was initially slated for a 2014 or 2015 release with Jackson directing, that timeline did not materialize. The original film followed the intrepid reporter Tintin and his dog Snowy as they searched for the treasure of the Unicorn.
Jackson also provided updates on two upcoming films set in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. He stated that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is nearing the end of its production, with only two weeks of filming remaining. This movie, directed by and starring Andy Serkis as Gollum, focuses on Aragorn's quest to locate Gollum at Gandalf's behest before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. It is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
Additionally, Jackson confirmed that The Shadow of the Past, a project being developed by Stephen Colbert and Philippa Boyens, is still in the scriptwriting phase. This film will explore the adventures of Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace their steps 14 years after Frodo's departure to Valinor. Jackson debunked previous reports suggesting the film's development was in jeopardy following a studio merger.
