Petit Planet, an upcoming title from Hoyoverse, aims to capture the cozy life simulation appeal of Nintendo's Animal Crossing series, but with a distinct cosmic twist. Early impressions from Gamescom suggest a game that liberally borrows mechanics and presentation from its inspiration, transplanting them into a "galactic pasture" setting.
The game allows players to create a human character and choose from a selection of planets, including lush, forest-like environments and arid desert worlds. Gameplay involves familiar life simulation activities such as catching fish and bugs, harvesting fruit from trees, and befriending a cast of animal villagers.
As players progress, their chosen planet expands, unlocking new areas like beaches and the ability to invite more neighbors. For instance, a farmer fox named Yunguo took an interest in one player's planet, participating in crop planting and subsequently gaining the option to move her house nearby. The game also features a magical eco-tank, which serves a similar purpose to Animal Crossing's museum by housing first-time catches, though it lacks elaborate exhibits.
A key feature highlighted is the player's freedom in decorating and placing structures. Unlike Animal Crossing, Petit Planet offers 360-degree control over the placement and rotation of the player's house and those of their villagers. This freedom extends to the potential for a wide array of decorative items to personalize the planetary environment.
While the core gameplay loop appears to mirror Animal Crossing, a significant question remains regarding the integration of gacha mechanics, a hallmark of Hoyoverse's other titles. Pre-registration rewards hint at a generous influx of in-game currency, and it is anticipated that character recruitment will follow a banner system. Developers hope that the gacha elements will not detract from the relaxing nature of the life simulation experience, a potential juxtaposition that could feel like "oil and water."
Despite concerns about its monetization model, the game has already garnered significant interest. Its promise of delivering an Animal Crossing-like experience on PC makes it a noteworthy contender for players seeking a familiar yet distinct cozy gaming adventure.
