Phantom Blade Zero Achieves Massive Steam Launch with Over 700,000 Concurrent Players

Phantom Blade Zero, the ambitious action-RPG from Chinese developer S-Game, has experienced a monumental launch on Steam, quickly amassing over 700,000 concurrent players within its first 24 hours. This impressive figure places the kungfupunk adventure among the top 15 most-played games at launch in Steam's history.

The game has garnered strong reviews for its fast-paced combat and striking art style. Early player feedback on Steam has been positive, with many users praising the title. One user review noted, "Another Chinese studio came out of nowhere and made a banger game. So far so good."

This success echoes the trajectory of other prominent games from Chinese developers, such as Black Myth: Wukong, which holds the second-highest all-time concurrent player launch on Steam. However, analysis suggests Phantom Blade Zero may not reach the same level of broad cultural recognition as Black Myth: Wukong. According to Shenzhen-based consultant Daniel Camilo, while Phantom Blade Zero is eagerly awaited by core gamers, it has not achieved the widespread mainstream awareness in China or globally that Black Myth: Wukong did.

S-Game has already released a significant day-one patch for Phantom Blade Zero. The developers stated that the patch aims to refine the game's visuals, ensuring environments adhere to the art direction even with ray tracing disabled. The update also includes extensive testing on mid-range and lower-end PCs, as well as handheld devices, to improve performance. The 5GB patch is accompanied by advice to potentially roll back Nvidia drivers for users experiencing performance issues.

Studio boss and creative director Soulframe Liang shared a heartfelt message alongside the patch announcement, reflecting on the game's origins. He described Phantom Blade Zero as a project born from humble beginnings during his student years, carrying immense scale and passion. "This is a game of immense scale, made with all the passion in our hearts. It is a gift from a small group of gamers who just happen to be developers, to every gamer who shares our love for gaming," Liang wrote.
