Phantom Blade Zero, an anticipated wuxia-inspired action RPG, has adjusted its release date to October 29th, placing it just three weeks before the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19th. Despite concerns that this proximity might impact its reception, the game's director, Qiwei "Soulframe" Liang, expressed a relaxed attitude toward the scheduling.

Liang stated in an interview with PC Gamer that the decision was not driven by marketing strategies to avoid a crowded September release window or to position itself near Rockstar's highly anticipated title. Instead, he emphasized that the primary motivation for the date shift was to enhance the game's overall quality. "We don't think about any of this. We only think of the quality of the product itself," Liang explained. He believes that competition has minimal bearing on a game's success, asserting that "99 percent of the decision [was about] development."

While Phantom Blade Zero and Grand Theft Auto 6 belong to different genres—the former a Soulslike action RPG with melee combat and the latter an open-world crime simulation—the concern among developers is that an immensely popular release like GTA 6 can dominate player attention and media coverage, overshadowing other titles. This phenomenon has contributed to a notable cluster of game releases in the September-October period, creating what has been described as a "GTA 6-shaped black hole" in the release calendar.

However, Liang does not view the upcoming GTA 6 launch as a significant threat. "What matters is how polished the game is, and if we have one or two extra months, we can fix more bugs, do more optimisations, so that we don't need a huge day one patch," he commented. The strategy of delaying releases to avoid this crowded period has already seen action, with other titles like the first-person Soulslike Valor Mortis also shifting its launch date.

Phantom Blade Zero is slated to receive a dedicated PlayStation State of Play showcase later this summer, promising 15-20 minutes of new gameplay. The game is scheduled to launch on PC and PlayStation 5 on October 29th.
