Phantom Blade Zero Preview: Kungfupunk Combat Makes a Striking Impression

After an extensive preview session, Phantom Blade Zero is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated action games of the upcoming release calendar. Developer S-Game aims to bring Chinese martial arts to life with its unique “kungfupunk” combat system, blending accessible controls with intense parries and visually stunning Wuxia-inspired animations.

A Blade Forged in Wuxia

The narrative follows Soul, an assassin on the run from a shadowy organization known as The Order. After a near-fatal encounter with his childhood friend Zuo Shang, Soul is given a new lease on life, albeit one with a ticking clock of 66 days, by a mysterious Flesh Sculptor. This premise sets Soul on a path of action-packed adventure, presumably to confront Zuo Shang once more. While the overarching story may not be the primary draw, the focus on visceral combat and intricate choreography, aided by martial arts legend Donnie Yen as a creative consultant, elevates the experience.

S-Game’s collaboration with Yen, along with action director Kenji Tanigaki, ensures that every animation possesses an exaggerated flourish. Soul’s movements are not mere actions but dramatic leaps and sword twirls, embodying the spectacle of Wuxia cinema. This stylistic excess lends the game a unique charm, even amidst challenging encounters with monstrous foes.

Deep Combat and Epic Boss Fights

The core of Phantom Blade Zero lies in its combat. While initially appearing to rely on simple button presses, the system reveals considerable depth, particularly through Soul’s Sha-chi meter. This resource governs his most powerful combos, and effectively managing it by switching weapons to refill the meter is crucial for sustained offense. This mechanic draws parallels to the weapon-transforming combos seen in games like Bloodborne.

Boss battles are a standout feature, offering intense, multi-phase challenges. Unlike many action games, Phantom Blade Zero includes checkpoints between boss phases, allowing players to retry a specific stage of the fight. Encounters range from adversaries on horse-drawn carriages to foes that sprout extra limbs, and even a memorable battle involving a lion head puppet and fire-shooting mechanics. While regular enemy encounters can feel more routine, the boss fights showcase the full potential of the game's combat system and creative design.

Additional Details and Release Information

Beyond the combat, S-Game has outlined additional details for Phantom Blade Zero. The main campaign is expected to last between 35-40 hours for experienced action game players. The game will feature over 30 weapons and an additional 20 Phantom Edges, which function as special attacks. While largely linear, the game incorporates light Metroidvania elements where certain Phantom Edges can be used to traverse and access new areas.

Phantom Blade Zero will offer three initial difficulty options: easy, medium, and hard, all of which can be changed at any time, with the caveat that lowering the difficulty to easy prevents switching back up. An unlockable “66 Days” difficulty mode introduces a penalty where each death subtracts a day from Soul’s remaining lifespan. The significance of the 66-day timer in the narrative is still somewhat unclear, though it appears to have a narrative purpose.

Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled for release on October 29 for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.
