Developer S-Game has offered a closer look at the world of Phantom Blade Zero, detailing an interconnected environment that eschews both traditional linear progression and sprawling open-world design. In a recent PlayStation State of Play presentation, the studio revealed that the game's world is comprised of eight distinct regions, each presented as an "authentic, hand-painted Chinese ink wash map."
These maps are designed to guide players through intricate yet surreal landscapes, including bandit-infested valleys, desolate warehouses, and steam-powered industrial towers. While some maps provide only a general sense of direction in complex areas, encouraging exploration and discovery, they ultimately connect to form a single, cohesive world. Players can fast travel between discovered locations using in-game bells.
According to S-Game founder Soulframe Liang, Phantom Blade Zero is intentionally positioned between linear action games and open-world RPGs. The developer has emphasized that the areas previously shown in demos, featuring challenging boss encounters, were optional diversions from the main narrative, highlighting the substantial scope of even these side content areas. The recent showcase provided a more concrete look at primary characters and key locations, offering a clearer picture of the game's unique structure.
Exploration within these regions may also be enhanced by light metroidvania-style elements. Examples shown in the State of Play video included using weapons to smash through obstacles, suggesting that players might need to revisit areas with new abilities or equipment to uncover secrets and access new paths. The extent of this exploration mechanic remains to be seen, but S-Game hopes to deliver a world design that rivals the acclaimed structure of games like Dark Souls.
In other news regarding Phantom Blade Zero, Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen has been involved in the game's development since 2023, contributing to its production.
