Phasmophobia Sells Over 30 Million Copies, Crimson Eye Halloween Event Returns

Phasmophobia has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 30 million sales across PC and console platforms since its initial Early Access launch in 2020. Developer Kinetic Games announced the sales figure alongside the return of its annual Crimson Eye Halloween event, which is now live and will continue until November 1.

The Crimson Eye event introduces blood moon weather to a selection of maps each day. This atmospheric change not only makes ghosts more aggressive and speeds up sanity drain but also increases in-game rewards. The maps featured in the event rotation include Tanglewood Drive, Camp Woodwind, Grafton Farmhouse, Bleasdale Farmhouse, Point Hope (standard maps only), Edgefield Road, Nell's Diner, and Willow Street.

Players can work towards community goals to unlock the Beholder ID Card and Badge, as well as the Blood Moon Trophy. Personal objectives during the event will grant access to the Blood Moon Charm, a special seasonal t-shirt, and upgrades for the Crimson Eye trophy.

Further engagement opportunities include a Twitch promotion: watching two hours of Phasmophobia streams between October 8 and October 15 will reward players with a Crimson Eye t-shirt cosmetic. Additionally, from October 15 to October 22, players can earn double XP and rewards.

For the final week of the event, from October 26 to November 1, the "Ghost Hunts 4 Hearts" mode will return. This initiative supports the American Heart Association, following a successful effort last year where the Phasmophobia community raised over $100,000 for the charity.

Daniel Knight, CEO of Kinetic Games and game director for Phasmophobia, reflected on the game's journey. "So much has changed since I started making Phasmophobia on my own at my parents' house," Knight stated. "My initial goal was to sell 1,000 units in the first year, so it's hard to believe we're celebrating 30 million. I'm so grateful to everyone who has played, and to the team who have worked alongside me on it. There is plenty more to come as we head towards 1.0."

The full 1.0 release of Phasmophobia is currently slated for the latter half of 2027. Kinetic Games plans to begin sharing development sneak peeks for the 1.0 version next year, which will include significant overhauls to ghost design and core gameplay mechanics.

Earlier this year, Kinetic Games also launched an independent publishing arm, Kinetic Publishing. Its first title, the starship job simulator Contact Protocol, is scheduled for release in Spring 2027.

Phasmophobia is available in Early Access on Steam, PlayStation 5, PS VR2, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is also confirmed to be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, though a release window has not yet been specified.

The game's 1.0 launch was previously delayed from its original target of this year into 2027. Kinetic Games cited a focus on quality, particularly in the wake of player feedback regarding the 'Player Character Update.' The studio issued an apology to players, acknowledging that the update had "missed the mark" and "didn't deliver on our promises." Subsequent patches and hotfixes have aimed to address issues and improve the player experience, with the most recent Quality of Life update introducing new restricted maps, streamlined evidence collection, VR fixes, and increased ways for players to encounter danger.
