A rare "Raincoat Pikachu" Pokémon trading card has sold at auction for an astounding $8.4 million, marking the second-highest price ever recorded for a Pokémon card. The sale, which occurred on auction site Fanatics Collect, has baffled observers given the card's relatively recent origin and a history of significantly lower valuations.
The 'Raincoat Pikachu' Phenomenon
The card in question, featuring Pikachu in a red raincoat and yellow rain bonnet, originated in 2015. It was a prize from a competition associated with the release of the Nintendo 3DS game Pokémon Art Academy. Winners received 100 copies of the card, making them privately distributed and exceptionally rare. The winner whose design was used, Y. Fujishima, apparently made many of these cards available. The grading company PSA lists 57 copies in Gem Mint PSA 10 condition, a relatively high number for a highly valuable card.
This abundance contrasts sharply with the highest-priced Pokémon card of all time: the 1997 Illustrator Pikachu. Logan Paul purchased a PSA 10 graded version of that card for $16.5 million in February. The Illustrator Pikachu had an initial print run of only 39 to 41 copies, with just one example achieving a PSA 10 grade. The significant difference in rarity and scarcity between the two cards makes the $8.4 million price for the Raincoat Pikachu particularly perplexing.
Market Anomaly
Recent sales data for PSA 10 graded Raincoat Pikachu cards indicate a dramatic inflation. Price Charting records show sales in 2025 for $16,100 and $26,100. While prices have increased this year, the previous highest sale in June was $156,250 at Heritage Auctions, with another selling for $79,999.99 just last month. The recent $8.4 million sale represents a 5,340 percent increase since its June auction price.
Fanatics Collect, a marketplace launched by the sports platform Fanatics in 2024, hosted the auction which received 64 bids. While reports suggest the sale was legitimate, the price jump defies conventional market explanations. There are unconfirmed reports of the same card selling for under $10,000 on a Chinese auction site, Pokecolor, the previous week.
Questions remain about the factors contributing to this extraordinary valuation. Fanatics has been contacted for comment regarding the sale and any potential explanations for the price surge.
