Playasia Store Shuts Down Amidst 'Relentless' Cyberattacks

Hong Kong-based online retailer Playasia has temporarily shut down its store after enduring weeks of sophisticated and persistent cyberattacks. The company's CEO, Jan Neuhäußer, announced the decision via a statement on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that the move was necessary to complete a full security audit and strengthen its systems.

"After weeks of increasingly sophisticated and relentless attacks against us and several of our trusted partners, we made the decision to go dark while we complete a full security audit and harden our systems," Neuhäußer stated. He emphasized that the attacks are not random and that Playasia is part of a broader, coordinated campaign targeting thousands of digital-first companies.

Neuhäußer expressed deep gratitude for the team's efforts and the community's support over Playasia's nearly 24 years of operation. "Watching our team work around the clock, exhausted but still fighting to protect what we have built together, has brought me to tears more than once," he wrote. The company has reported the incidents to relevant authorities and cybercrime units worldwide and is cooperating fully to identify those responsible.

Playasia, founded in 2002, is known for offering region-exclusive and Asian-English versions of video games, alongside toys and collectibles. The shutdown occurs during a period of heightened concern for internet security, with security professionals dubbing it 'Black October.' This period saw the discovery of critical vulnerabilities in PHP, a scripting language used by a significant portion of websites. While there is no direct evidence linking the Playasia attacks to the PHP vulnerability, the timing highlights a precarious landscape for online security.
