PlayStation 6 RAM and Storage Could Cost $680, Leaker Claims

Rumors surrounding the PlayStation 6's potential component costs suggest that its RAM and storage alone could reach $680, according to a leaker known as Kepler_L2. This figure reportedly represents a substantial increase, potentially surpassing the entire retail price of the PlayStation 5.

Kepler_L2 previously estimated the PS6's Bill of Materials (BoM) at $760 in March. However, ongoing issues within the RAM market have allegedly driven that cost up by approximately $200 since June, pushing the estimated BoM to around $960. This figure does not account for additional expenses such as research and development, marketing, and shipping.

Further speculation within the same NeoGaf thread indicates the PS6 could feature a GPU with around 40 teraflops of compute performance, with a potential upgrade codenamed 'Project Helix' reaching 56 teraflops. While teraflops are not a definitive measure of gaming performance, these numbers would suggest a GPU roughly between the performance of an AMD Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. For context, the RX 9070 currently retails for approximately $900, though its launch price was $549. The leaker's $680 estimate for RAM and NAND storage implies that the GPU itself would still add a significant cost, even with potential bulk purchasing discounts from Sony.

If these component cost estimates are accurate, the total manufacturing cost for the PS6 could exceed $1,000 or even $1,100. Sony has previously indicated that it does not intend to sell hardware at a significant loss. This suggests that the retail price of the PS6 could be well over $1,000, potentially even reaching $1,200.

In parallel with these cost speculations, Sony has been active in patenting new technologies. Recent filings include a proprietary frame generation technique, an AI system for training NPCs based on player behavior, a controller that functions as an NFC card reader, and an AI agent designed to detect and patch hardware flaws proactively.

While an official release date for the PS6 remains unannounced, industry analysts have predicted a potential launch around 2028, especially following Sony's decision to discontinue physical disc production for new PlayStation games in January 2028.
