Sony's recent announcement that it will phase out physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in 2028 has ignited significant backlash from gamers, leading to a wider online protest that is now impacting the launch of new titles. Developers of critically acclaimed games are finding their releases inadvertently caught in the crossfire, with some players actively urging others to boycott PlayStation versions of these games.

The digital-only title Denshattack!, developed by Undercoders, recently launched to rave reviews, including a 9/10 from IGN. However, PlayStation's promotional posts for the game on social media have been inundated with negative comments and calls to purchase the game on alternative platforms. Many of these posts are being used as an outlet for broader anger regarding Sony's decision to discontinue physical media.

Commentary from prominent figures within the gaming community highlights the frustration. Fighting game content creator Avataryaya, in a widely viewed post, declared, "DO NOT PLAY THIS ON PS5! It's also out today with a stellar PC port, and a locked 60 on Switch 2! Buy it elsewhere!" This sentiment is echoed by other users, with one tweet stating, "Genuine banger games are being released that are being buried/lambasted by your awful decision... Will be buying this on Switch instead of PS."

Analysts suggest that Sony is unlikely to reverse its decision, citing the significant profitability of digital sales. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, noted that even a substantial protest, such as half a million PlayStation Plus cancellations, would represent only a small fraction of Sony's massive user base and would not be enough to alter the company's strategic direction. Digital distribution offers substantially higher profit margins for Sony, as the company retains 100% of revenue from first-party digital sales and a 30% cut from third-party digital titles, compared to the much smaller percentages from physical disc sales which involve retailer cuts and manufacturing costs.

Piers Harding-Rolls, games industry analyst at Ampere, pointed to long-term trends in the industry, where digital game sales have steadily increased. Data indicates that by 2025, digital purchases accounted for nearly 80% of all full game sales on Sony consoles, a significant jump from just 13% at the launch of the PlayStation 4 in 2013. While acknowledging valid concerns from gamers regarding choice, preservation, and the ability to collect physical media, Harding-Rolls underscored that purchasing trends clearly favor digital content.

Some analysts believe that gamers have missed their opportunity to influence this shift. Robin Zhu, a games analyst at Bernstein, suggested that had consumers purchased more physical games in the past, Sony's decision-making process would have led to a different outcome. The substantial profit margins associated with digital game sales, which largely bypass the costs of physical packaging, shipping, and retailer margins, are a key driver behind Sony's strategic pivot.
