Pokémon Aquapolis Lugia Card Shatters Record, Selling for $360,000

A PSA 10 Holo Lugia card from the 2002 Pokémon TCG set Aquapolis has sold for $360,000 at auction, more than doubling the previous record of $148,511. This sale highlights the enduring appeal and escalating value of rare Pokémon cards.

This particular Lugia card, often referred to as "Crystal" Lugia, is from the first three e-Reader sets: Expedition, Aquapolis, and Skyridge. These sets were released during a period when the Pokémon TCG's popularity had dipped, resulting in limited print runs. Skyridge, the final e-Card series set, notably had only a single printing. The era also marked the end of Wizards of the Coast's publishing duties for the TCG, with Pokémon USA taking over for the Ruby & Sapphire sets.

The Allure of Crystal Lugia

The "Crystal" designation applies to a group of cards from these sets that featured iconic Pokémon retooled as Colorless Pokémon. These cards shared a unique Poké-Body ability called Crystal Type, which allowed their typing to change based on the type of Basic Energy attached. This ability was featured on various Pokémon, including Golem, Crobat, Kingdra, Celebi, Ho-Oh, and Lugia.

All Crystal Pokémon cards were Secret Rares, indicated by card numbers exceeding the set's standard count, such as Lugia from Aquapolis being numbered 149/147. This inherent scarcity contributed to their desirability among dedicated collectors.

The artwork for Crystal Lugia, created by Naoyo Kimura, is particularly striking. It depicts Lugia emerging from a tempestuous sea, with a canted frame that adds dynamic visual interest. The card's design also features a unique text box background with a multifaceted, diamond-like lattice, and a compact art box due to the e-Reader interface elements, making the art stand out.

A Resurgence in Popularity

Crystal Lugia has also reappeared in the recent 30th Celebration set, quickly becoming one of its most valuable cards. This resurgence underscores the card's status as a defining piece from the e-Reader era.

More than two decades after its initial release, Crystal Lugia's combination of unusual mechanics, exceptional artwork, scarcity, and now a record-breaking auction price solidify its position as one of the ultimate grails in the Pokémon TCG collecting community.
