The Pokémon Company has announced the official end of support for Pokémon Bank, a long-standing service that facilitated the transfer of Pokémon across multiple generations of games. This shutdown, scheduled for February 25, will not only impact the ability to move creatures between older and newer titles but will also render certain in-game features and completionist elements inaccessible for present and future players.
For many fans, Pokémon Bank served as a vital link in their journey across diverse regions within the franchise. Beyond simple trading, the system enabled unique interactions with older games. For instance, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon featured an Alola Photo Club, which offered special backgrounds based on previous game environments. Accessing these backgrounds required players to use Pokémon originating from those specific older games, a feature that will be lost with the Bank's closure.
The shutdown will also significantly affect the Ribbon system, a collection of accolades awarded to Pokémon for achievements such as defeating regional Elite Fours. These Ribbons are designed to carry over with a Pokémon across different games, serving as a record of their cross-generational adventures. Without Pokémon Bank, many of these Ribbons will become permanently locked to a limited number of games, making it impossible to achieve the coveted status of a "ribbon master" with Pokémon that have experienced a wide range of titles.
Similarly, Titles, another form of in-game recognition earned through various achievements, will also become inaccessible in modern games once Pokémon Bank ceases to function. For example, the unique "The Living Legend" title will become unavailable.
Fans have been actively compiling lists of Pokémon, distinguishing traits, unique attacks, and abilities that will become unobtainable in current Pokémon titles following the shutdown. While these elements may seem minor to casual players, for a franchise with decades of interconnected gameplay, their loss represents a significant dimming of its extensive history and a sad farewell to features that enhanced the sense of a continuous Pokémon journey.
