Pokémon development veteran James Turner has returned to The Pokémon Company, months after the release of his studio's debut title, The Plucky Squire. Turner, who was the first Westerner to officially design Pokémon species during his tenure at developer Game Freak, announced his new role via X (formerly Twitter).

Turner departed Game Freak four years ago to co-found the studio All Possible Futures. The independent studio went on to release the indie platformer The Plucky Squire, which garnered attention for its unique mechanic of 2D characters interacting with a 3D world. It remains unclear what the future holds for the studio or any potential sequels to The Plucky Squire.

In his new position as Creative Director of Pokémon Art and Design at The Pokémon Company International, Turner's responsibilities will focus on the aesthetic and artistic direction of the franchise. This role suggests a shift away from designing individual Pokémon species, a task for which he is well-known.

During his time at Game Freak, Turner contributed to the designs of several distinctive Pokémon, including Vanillite, Bruxish, Dondozo, Sinistea, and Tatsugiri. He also designed creatures like Obstagoon, Phantump, and Ultra Beasts such as Buzzwole and Guzzlord. The Plucky Squire, meanwhile, was praised for its inventive puzzles and dimension-hopping gameplay, though IGN's review noted that the game could become repetitive. "A beautiful storybook adventure filled with brilliant wordplay-packed puzzles and clever dimension-hopping mechanics," IGN wrote, "but it drags on a bit too long after it's already used up all of its best ideas."
