A fan-made remake of Pokémon Emerald, titled Gamma Emerald, has been released in Early Access, bringing the beloved Game Boy Advance title to PC with a suite of modern features and a striking visual overhaul. Developed by a single individual under the name UndreamedPanic, the project leverages Unreal Engine to reimagine the 2004 classic.
Gamma Emerald currently covers the entirety of the original game's content from Littleroot Town to Mauville City. The remake features 2D-HD sprite work, with Pokémon companions following the player in the overworld, a common feature in later entries of the series. Players can currently challenge three gym leaders, with the in-progress version offering approximately six hours of gameplay. The remake also incorporates the original game's rematch system for additional playtime.
While double battles and online multiplayer are currently absent, the developer has introduced several new mechanics. A day-and-night cycle, which was missing from the original Pokémon Emerald, is now present. UndreamedPanic has also improved the usability of HM moves, eliminating the need to dedicate a move slot to utilities like Cut. Furthermore, Gamma Emerald adopts the Generation IV split of physical and special move categories, moving beyond the original game's reliance solely on move types. Some online functionality, such as trading, is available. A significant quality-of-life improvement allows players to access their Pokémon storage box at any time, rather than being restricted to a PC.
The ambitious project represents approximately 18 months of development, with the creator dedicating 12-hour days to engine work, tools, sprites, music, and models. Despite the significant effort, UndreamedPanic has indicated a potential for a long break following the release due to fatigue. The remake has already received an update addressing various bug fixes since its launch.
UndreamedPanic has emphasized that the project is a non-commercial fan game, stating on X that "No money is accepted for this project in any form." The developer encourages players who enjoy Gamma Emerald to support the official Pokémon games. The project's itch.io page also includes a message advising, "If you enjoy this, please buy the official games."
