A collective of Pokémon enthusiasts operating under the name MercuryEnigma has successfully devised a method to inject custom events into Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. This breakthrough allows for the creation and distribution of fan-made items or Pokémon directly into the Nintendo Switch ports of the Game Boy Advance titles. MercuryEnigma has shared a demonstration video, sparking significant interest among players eager to replicate the process.

The ports of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen arrived on the Nintendo Switch in February, offering both long-time fans a nostalgic return to the Kanto region and new players their first experience with the classic remakes. While players can build their Pokédex within these games, transferring Pokémon to other titles was limited until the upcoming addition of Pokémon Home support in October. As an incentive for completing the Kanto Pokédex in FireRed and LeafGreen, players will receive a Celebi within Pokémon Home. However, once a Pokémon is transferred to Pokémon Home, it cannot be returned to its original FireRed or LeafGreen save file. Players can utilize Pokémon Home's Pokédex functionality without transferring Pokémon to receive the Celebi reward without permanent emigration of their in-game companions.

Seeking a way to introduce Pokémon like Celebi into FireRed and LeafGreen without relying on the official transfer system, the fan group explored alternative methods. Their solution involves programming fan-made events that can be distributed over local wireless connections. By employing a WiFi chip connected to a computer, MercuryEnigma was able to emulate a local wireless connection to unmodded Nintendo Switch consoles. This setup enabled the emulated console to receive items or Pokémon via the game's Mystery Gift feature, effectively delivering custom content.

While the project is still under development, the group has already demonstrated its success by obtaining a Level 50 event Celebi. Further details and a potential guide are expected to be shared by MercuryEnigma, which could enable fans to create their own custom events, perhaps even to obtain a Mew and fully complete the original Gen 1 Pokédex within the FireRed and LeafGreen ports.
