Pokémon Go developer Scopely is providing all players with a perfect Mewtwo featuring a special anniversary background to compensate for a controversial influencer-focused event. The gesture aims to appease fans upset by a recent 10th-anniversary celebration in New York City's Times Square.
During the July event, influencers and content creators were granted access to a Mewtwo with perfect stats and a unique background. Some attendees later listed these exclusive variants for sale online at prices ranging from $500 to $5,000. This limited access sparked frustration among the wider player base.
While Mewtwo was available through raids during the global Pokémon Go Fest in July, obtaining a Pokémon with perfect stats, often referred to as a "hundoo," is exceptionally rare and typically requires purchasing additional raid passes. To claim the compensatory Mewtwo, players now need to complete a straightforward timed research task. This involves catching 10 Pokémon and powering up a Pokémon 10 times. The Go Fest event concludes on September 6 with a Mega Finale, which will offer further opportunities to encounter Mewtwo with a special background.
Adding to the reward, the gifted hundo Mewtwo will also have its third Mega Level unlocked, enabling it to become Mega Mewtwo Y, mirroring the form battled and caught by attendees at the Times Square event. Additionally, trainers will receive a Master Ball, a rare item that guarantees the capture of any Pokémon with a single throw.
Scopely has stated that the Mewtwo with the exclusive Times Square background will be made available again in the future, likely during another Go Fest event. Players who were physically present at the Times Square event will still receive a Mewtwo with different stats. ![A stylized image of Mewtwo from Pokemon Go, with a celebratory background.]
