Developer DeNA is set to implement significant updates to Pokémon TCG Pocket, coinciding with the game's upcoming second anniversary. These changes aim to address player feedback regarding the overwhelming pace of new card releases and enhance core gameplay features like trading and the collection of rare Immersive Cards.
Adjusting the Release Cadence
Pokémon TCG Pocket has faced criticism for its rapid release schedule, with new sets and card collections launching approximately every four weeks. This pace has made it challenging for players to keep up with collecting recent sets and adapt to the constantly shifting battle meta, leading to a strong sense of FOMO. To combat this, the developers will be extending the booster pack release cycle to roughly six weeks. This adjustment is intended to allow players more time to enjoy building their collections at a comfortable pace.
Enhancing Immersive Card Acquisition and Special Packs
Immersive Cards, a standout feature of Pokémon TCG Pocket known for their animated effects, have historically been difficult to obtain due to extremely low pull rates, estimated at around 1 percent. Moving forward, DeNA plans to introduce new ways to acquire these special cards, shifting from a purely luck-based system to one that rewards players for "completing collections." The upcoming "C series" will also introduce Special Packs, which utilize a unique "special pack stamina" that replenishes weekly. The first of these, the "First Partners" set, will feature all 27 starter Pokémon. Additionally, 1-star promo cards, previously only available as standard cards, will now appear in full-art formats as mission rewards.
Overhauling Deck Building and Trading
Deck-building functionality is receiving a substantial upgrade with the introduction of "Community Decks." This feature will allow players to easily build decks that are currently popular in the competitive meta, eliminating the need to consult external websites for strategies. Rental decks will also become more accessible, with unlimited uses and availability at the start of new set launches. Trading, a feature that has been criticized for its lack of clarity, will see improvements designed to streamline the process. The game will now display what cards a friend is missing and their complete wishlist, reducing wasted trade attempts and making it easier to find desired cards.
Despite these welcome changes, the article notes that persistent issues with the app's performance, particularly its sluggishness and unresponsiveness on Android and iOS devices, have not been addressed. The game has reportedly lost half its player base since launch, a decline attributed partly to the lack of fundamental improvements and the ongoing performance problems.
