Proof of Play, the blockchain game startup co-founded by FarmVille creator Amitt Mahajan, has announced its closure. The studio’s demise comes approximately one year after it shut down its flagship game, Pirate Nation. Proof of Play joins a growing list of companies that have struggled to find a sustainable business model in the blockchain gaming space.
The studio’s attempt to merge casual gameplay with crypto incentives and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) failed to resonate with a broad gaming audience. In a statement on X, the team acknowledged their inability to prove out their thesis at scale, stating, “Ultimately, we couldn't build a product and sustainable business that proved out this thesis at scale.”
Pirate Nation, launched in 2022, was a browser-based game featuring card-driven ship battles and island base-building, with crypto elements integrated into its design. Despite initial player interest, demand waned as the broader crypto gaming trend lost momentum and the value of tokens and NFTs declined significantly. Last August, Proof of Play, which had secured $33 million in venture funding, shifted its focus from the full Pirate Nation game to smaller minigames.
This closure highlights the fragility of blockchain-based gaming ventures. The promise of decentralized gaming and player-owned assets, often promoted as a path to a new internet, has not translated into widespread adoption or financial success for most developers. The Pirate Nation game’s token, PIRATE, has fallen 99.8% from its peak price.
The broader crypto gaming landscape has seen several high-profile projects falter. Axie Infinity, once a popular monster-battling game that promised crypto income, experienced an economic collapse and a significant data breach. Other projects like Deadrop and Square Enix’s Symbiogenesis have also ended, while major publishers like Ubisoft are scaling back their blockchain initiatives. Ubisoft announced it will shut down Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles in October, following a decision to transition away from blockchain functionality.
In its final act, Proof of Play has open-sourced much of Pirate Nation’s code and art, hoping to provide a resource for future developers in the space. The studio’s closure underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the blockchain gaming industry in establishing mainstream appeal and viable business models.
