Sony has released a new beta firmware update for the PlayStation 5, offering early access to new features for those enrolled in the beta program. The update includes notable improvements for owners of the PlayStation 5 Pro, particularly concerning its upscaling technology.
The firmware now makes Sony's upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) 2.0 upscaling technology the default option for all games. Previously, PSSR 2.0 was only applied to games that natively supported it, while others defaulted to the older 1.0 version. While an earlier firmware allowed PS5 Pro owners to force-toggle PSSR 2.0 at the console level, this new beta update establishes it as the default setting, though it can still be manually disabled.
PSSR was introduced with the PS5 Pro, featuring AI upscaling developed by Sony. The initial version received mixed reactions, with some users reporting blurrier images. However, an upgraded version, PSSR 2.0, was later released and has since been adopted by an increasing number of games.
Another significant addition in the beta firmware is the ability to completely turn off Bluetooth. This feature, available in select countries or regions for both the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro, also disables HDMI link and the console's Rest Mode when Bluetooth is deactivated. Sony suggests this function is primarily intended for use in esports venues or environments with multiple consoles, where turning off Bluetooth can simplify controller and peripheral pairing to the desired console.
The beta program is currently limited to specific regions. Interested users can find information on how to join through community forums.
