Interest in jailbreaking and pirating PlayStation 5 games has surged following Sony's recent announcement that it will end the production of physical games in 2028. The move has reportedly prompted some users to express their dissatisfaction by turning to piracy and to explore options for preserving access to games.
Rumors of a PS5 jailbreak emerged in early 2026, with initial methods reportedly requiring a physical copy of a Star Wars game. Over the subsequent months, hackers have developed various methods to jailbreak consoles, particularly those running earlier firmware versions. Users with jailbroken systems have utilized these exploits to download modern and retro games, install file managers, and enhance media playback capabilities.
The recent news regarding Sony's pivot to a digital-only future for physical games has intensified this sentiment. Google Trends data shows a roughly 20% increase in searches for 'PS5 jailbreak' within the last 24 hours. Online comments on videos detailing PS5 jailbreak procedures frequently reference Sony's digital strategy. One commenter on a popular jailbreak tutorial video asked, "Who here is after the last week of Playstation literally trying to commit seppoku?" Another expressed anger with the statement, "fuck sony fuck rockstar fuck this generation."
The PS5 jailbreak subreddit has also seen a notable increase in activity, with weekly visitors reportedly growing by approximately 10,000 since late May. The price of the Star Wars game previously used in some jailbreak methods has consequently risen on eBay, from an average of around $250 in January to between $300 and $400 currently.
This trend echoes similar sentiments seen on older PlayStation platforms. The impending closure of the PlayStation Store on older consoles and the recent removal of purchased movies from the PlayStation Store without refunds have led some users to question digital ownership. On the PS3 subreddit, discussions about emulators for retro games and the benefits of modding consoles have become more prevalent, with one thread title suggesting, "This should be your call to finally join us in the civilized world, and mod your PS3."
