New data from Alinea Analytics indicates a significant divergence between the types of games purchased physically and digitally on the PlayStation 5 in 2026. The analysis highlights that top-selling physical PS5 titles are largely single-player AAA games, with Capcom's Resident Evil Requiem leading the pack. The game is estimated to have sold 1.3 million units on PS5, making it the only title on the physical best-seller list to surpass the one million sales mark.
Other prominent physical releases include 007 First Light, which sold an estimated 873,000 units, and Marvel's Wolverine, with 799,000 units sold. These titles contrast with the overall market trend, where digital sales hold a substantial 70/30 lead. EA Sports FC 27, for instance, saw only 8.9% of its sales come from physical copies, reflecting a broader pattern where sports franchises heavily favor digital distribution.
Regional Preferences and Publisher Strategies
The data suggests that first-party PlayStation titles and games with a strong Japanese appeal tend to perform better in physical formats. Capcom's Pragmata and Onimusha: Way of the Sword are examples, with sales nearly evenly split between physical and digital. This is attributed to Japanese consumers' continued preference for physical media, which accounts for approximately 11-12% of sales for these titles in that region. While digital adoption is increasing in Japan, the cultural inclination towards physical copies remains. Other games like Silent Hill: Townfall, Beast of Reincarnation, Yakuza Kiwami 3, and the Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly remake also show similar physical/digital splits in Japan.
Sony is actively encouraging a digital shift, even releasing a digital-only PS5 model in Japan priced at $350. This strategy aims to maximize revenue, as physical sales involve costs such as retailer margins and distribution, and prevent Sony from profiting from the second-hand market. Digital sales, conversely, grant Sony a direct 30% cut.
The Digital Dominance of Sports Titles
Sports games represent a significant portion of top-selling titles by revenue, with five of the top 10 new PlayStation games in 2026 belonging to the genre. Franchises like EA Sports FC, NBA 2K, Madden, College Football, and MLB The Show demonstrate a strong preference for digital purchases. This trend is driven partly by publishers offering incentives such as early access for digital editions, nudging consumers away from physical copies over time.
Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea, noted that while this digital push aims to increase revenue per player, it risks alienating a segment of the player base. However, he believes Sony will not suffer significant revenue losses, as most players will transition to digital. The economic rationale for prioritizing digital sales is sound, though Elliott suggests Sony's communication strategy regarding this shift has been lacking, potentially creating friction with consumers accustomed to physical media.
