Quake Brutalist Jam 3 arrives as a megalithic overhaul that redefines the classic with a dense, grey aesthetic. The third brutalist map jam is not merely fan-made content but a massive conversion that dwarfs the original Quake, boasting 77 maps. Development began in winter 2024, and in October 2025 the work-in-progress mod was released to the community, followed by six weeks of testing, exploration, and world-building by players. The project blurb sums up the ambition: "The goal for QBJ3 was to make something uniquely ambitious for the community to build with us." The result is an oppressively beautiful, gritty, and utterly huge total conversion that seeks to push the boundaries of the Quake sandbox.
Beyond the map density, QBJ3 adds a suite of new weapons, monsters, powerups, and a complete visual overhaul of Quake's roster. Notable armaments include Skullcracker, a pipe wrench, and dual-wielded automatic nail guns, plus the Rebar Cannon — an industrial crossbow that fires rusty metal bolts, with a churm-kachunk sound.
Two distribution paths exist to access the jam via Slipseer. The recommended version behaves like a traditional mod: it attaches to a copy of Quake and a chosen source port (Ironwail is recommended). A separate standalone option is also available, packaged with Ironwail and LibreQuake so players can run it immediately without adding the mod to an existing Quake install.
The Rebar Cannon acquisition requires choosing between the two options via Slipseer. The jam also includes content from veteran designer Robert Yang, whose work has appeared in RPS on Quake and level design.
Video previews and a sense of scale are widely shared; some footage demonstrates the massive layouts and the brutalist mood.
This is the third in a line of brutalist jams following 2022 and 2023, which delivered 35 and 30 maps respectively, showing a sustained community interest in reimagining the classic arena shooter through architecture and scale.
