Quake Champions has transitioned from a free-to-play live-service game to a paid application on Steam, now available for $10. This significant shift removes many of the elements associated with its 2017 launch, including the Battle Pass, weekly and event challenges, the in-game store, and platinum and shard currencies.
Players will also no longer find loot boxes, daily login rewards, or the champion progression system that awarded shards. Most vanity content is now available to all users. According to an update announcement, the move marks a new chapter for the game, which will not receive any further content updates.
For those who previously played Quake Champions on Steam, the new paid version will appear in their library at no additional cost. While recently purchased premium currency will be refunded, players who spent money on cosmetic items may find it notable that these are now universally accessible.
The game's live-service experiment is ending after several years, with recent years having focused on cosmetic updates for a smaller player base. The removal of loot boxes and the store is seen by some as an improvement, potentially making the game more appealing for occasional play. Classic skins for Quake Ranger and Doom Slayer are now included by default.
