id Software's seminal 1996 shooter Quake has received a significant free update, titled "Dawn of the Machine," which introduces new content developed by MachineGames, the studio behind the recent Doom titles.

This update adds 19 new levels to the game, expanding on two previous MachineGames expansions. The new chapter sees Quake's protagonist navigating "a dimension of endless illusion." Players can also look forward to new weapon variants, including the "Super Axe" that unleashes lightning on successive strikes and a "Laser Cannon" capable of firing ricocheting projectiles. The update also incorporates a gallery of archival material from Quake's development, featuring early, unfinished, and playable levels that offer a glimpse into the game's creation process. Notes found within this material, such as level names like "Tim" and "Tim10A," highlight the iterative and sometimes incomplete nature of game development.

The release of "Dawn of the Machine" was announced at QuakeCon, a notable moment as id Software co-founder John Romero pointed out that the announcement occurred on the 30th anniversary of his departure from the company, rather than the game's release date. Quake's development famously marked a period of significant change for id Software, with several key figures leaving the studio afterward. Some, like Sandy Petersen, have stated that Quake "ruined id Software," though the studio continued to produce influential titles such as Quake II and Quake III Arena, and later, the modern Doom series.

This period of renewed attention for Quake's legacy comes as id Software's parent company, Microsoft, undergoes substantial layoffs as part of a broader restructuring of its Xbox business. id Software co-founder John Carmack remarked that these layoffs would "dampen the mood" for the upcoming founders reunion panel at QuakeCon, where Romero, Carmack, Adrian Carmack, and Tom Hall are scheduled to discuss the studio's early days.
