A new action-adventure game titled Queen's Domain has emerged on Steam, drawing significant inspiration from FromSoftware's early King's Field series. Developed by Freshly Baked Games, the title aims to distinguish itself within the crowded indie market.
Senior producer Jean-Luc Seipke highlighted the game's striking retro visuals, which appear to bridge the graphical gap between the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 eras. While light on overt narrative, Queen's Domain employs environmental storytelling in a manner consistent with FromSoftware's signature style. Seipke noted that the initial 10 hours of gameplay, which constitutes only about 5% of the game according to an internal counter, provided a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
The combat mechanics are characterized by a slower pace, demanding players to maintain full stamina to deal damage. The absence of blocking or parrying mechanics necessitates physical evasion of enemy attacks, fostering a deliberate combat loop that requires careful observation of enemy animations and strategic movement.
Exploration is a key feature, particularly after acquiring the Holy Sword Endu. This weapon grants a mid-air dash ability, which can be upgraded for additional charges. As players progress, the game world, initially appearing linear, unfolds to reveal greater density and interconnectedness, allowing access to new areas through the sword's evolving capabilities and environmental interaction.
Players should be aware that Queen's Domain lacks checkpoints and auto-saves, meaning progress is lost upon death, reverting players to their last manual save. This feature may be a deterrent for those seeking a less punishing experience.
Queen's Domain is set to launch on Steam on October 30 for $20 and is confirmed as Verified for both Steam Machine and Steam Deck. A demo version of the game is currently available.
