The R-rated director's cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, previously announced as "The X-Files: Vrach Frankenshteyn," will be available on Hulu beginning August 14. This reworked version of the 2008 film aims to deliver a more frightening experience, as hinted by its revised title, which translates to "Victor Frankenstein."
Series creator Chris Carter had previously mentioned working on an R-rated cut, noting that the original film was made too scary for a PG-13 rating. Distributor Fox had mandated a PG-13 release, leading Carter to remove material and make further cuts to satisfy censors. The upcoming "Vrach Frankenshteyn" version is expected to differ significantly from both the original theatrical release and the DVD's "Extended Cut," which added only three minutes of footage.
The title's reference to Victor Frankenstein, the creator of the monster in Mary Shelley's novel, suggests an increased emphasis on horror elements. The film itself follows FBI agents Mulder and Scully as they investigate a case involving mutilation and psychic visions, taking place after the events of the original television series.
This release comes as The X-Files universe continues to expand. A reboot of the series is currently in development, with director Ryan Coogler attached. Casting for the reboot has already begun, attracting notable names, indicating a potentially active period for fans of the franchise.
