A new installment in The Mummy franchise is reportedly in the works, with Brendan Fraser set to reprise his role as Rick O'Connell. Significantly, Rachel Weisz will also return as Evie Carnahan, a role she last played in 2001's The Mummy Returns. Weisz did not participate in the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, citing script concerns and a desire to spend time with her young son.
Recent set photos have surfaced, offering a first glimpse of Weisz as Evie. Filming is occurring near the British Museum, a location also featured in The Mummy Returns. Based on a transistor radio visible in the photos, the scenes appear to be set in the late 1950s, approximately three decades after the original film's 1926 setting. The plot details and official title for the new movie remain undisclosed.
The franchise has struggled since Weisz's departure, with both Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and a 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise receiving largely negative reviews. The upcoming sequel aims to recapture the original film's appeal by bringing back several cast members. In addition to Fraser and Weisz, Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay, John Hannah as Jonathan Carnahan, Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep, and Kevin J. O'Connor as the deceased Beni Gabor are also expected to return. The film is slated for release on October 15, 2027.
