Rainbow Six Siege Director Braces for GTA 6 Launch, Vows to Reward Loyal Players

Grand Theft Auto 6's impending November launch is already prompting industry-wide adjustments, with many publishers scheduling their own major releases for September and early October to avoid direct competition. This strategic spacing highlights the anticipated seismic impact of Rockstar's title on the gaming landscape. Live-service games, in particular, are expected to see temporary dips in player numbers as enthusiasts flock to experience the new GTA installment.

Joshua Mills, creative director for Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Siege, acknowledged the significant challenge ahead. Speaking with The Game Business, Mills stated that "you're going to take a hit when that drops." He anticipates that even Rainbow Six Siege's dedicated player base will likely migrate to GTA 6 for a period. "People are going to play it, and then they’ll come back," Mills added, emphasizing the importance of managing expectations to keep teams and stakeholders aligned during these anticipated fluctuations. He views such dips as temporary and inherent to operating within a dynamic market.

Despite the anticipated player exodus, Ubisoft's approach for Rainbow Six Siege is not to retreat but to engage. "Our golden rule is to serve the players who stay like kings and queens," Mills declared. The strategy involves reinforcing the game's offerings during the GTA 6 launch window. "We don't go on vacation just because a competitor is swelling the market. We double down and reward those spending their valuable time with us." Coincidentally, Season Four of Rainbow Six Siege is slated to launch around the same time, introducing new elements to the game. Mills also hinted at undisclosed surprises being prepared to coincide with this period, aiming to make a notable impact and retain the loyalty of those who choose to remain with Siege.

This proactive strategy is a deliberate choice to counter the expected decline in player numbers, even while acknowledging the immense draw of Grand Theft Auto 6. It remains to be seen how other live-service games will navigate the launch of Rockstar's highly anticipated title.
