Tactics games are experiencing a resurgence, with titles like Marvel's Midnight Suns and Gears Tactics filling a space left by the infrequent XCOM installments. Ubisoft is now entering this landscape with Rainbow Six Tactics, developed by Ubisoft Paris, the studio behind Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. The game is slated for release in 2027.

Set between the 10th and 11th years of Rainbow Six Siege's lore, during a period of global crisis that necessitates the rebuilding of the Rainbow task force, the game aims to translate the tactical nature of the first-person shooter series into a turn-based strategy format. Long-time fans will recognize Paul Bishop, who returns as the head of the tactical unit. The game will also feature 15 operators from Siege, with each chosen for their unique impact and personality, a deliberate selection from the FPS game's larger roster.

Rainbow Six Tactics' most compelling innovation appears during its breach planning phase. Unlike many strategy games where units begin in predetermined positions, Rainbow Six Tactics allows players to formulate a comprehensive master plan for their turn before execution. This phase is akin to strategizing in chess, where players anticipate openings and potential opponent responses. Players can position all their units and issue orders that will execute simultaneously in real-time.

The infiltration itself is also a strategic choice, with different entry points offering distinct advantages—some stealthy, others more aggressive. During a gameplay demonstration at Gamescom 2026, this planning phase was showcased. For instance, a player could direct Nøkk to become invisible and bypass an enemy sniper's overwatch, then flank an enemy. Simultaneously, Montagne could advance to draw the sniper's fire and block the shot, allowing the rest of the team to execute their planned actions precisely. This synchronized execution can lead to eliminating enemies before they even have a chance to react, a satisfying prospect for players.

Rainbow Six Tactics is scheduled for release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, potentially bringing new players to the genre with its established IP and innovative mechanics.
