Ernest Cline's 2011 novel Ready Player One, a seminal work in the LitRPG genre, offered readers a dystopian adventure steeped in '80s pop culture. The story unfolds in a future where humanity escapes a bleak reality by immersing itself in the OASIS, a vast virtual universe. This MMORPG was created by James Donovan Halliday, who designed a contest to determine his successor: find a series of keys and navigate gates, a challenge requiring deep knowledge of '70s and '80s music, movies, and games.
Translating these references proved challenging for Steven Spielberg's 2018 film adaptation. Co-written by Cline and Zak Penn, the movie, while action-packed and nostalgic, had to alter many specific book references due to licensing issues. For example, a sequence based on the Tomb of Horrors Dungeons & Dragons module was omitted, and the Blade Runner section was replaced with one set within The Shining.
A new adaptation, Ready Player One: The Graphic Novel, written by Scott Peterson and illustrated by Meredith Laxton, aims to remain more faithful to Cline's original narrative. Publisher Ten Speed Graphic has provided an early look at pages introducing the novel's main characters. Although Wade Watts initially seeks Halliday's Easter eggs alone, he eventually relies on allies like Art3mis and Aech to overcome a corporation seeking to control and monetize the OASIS.
Cline expressed his enthusiasm for the graphic novel adaptation, stating, "As a longtime reader and lover of graphic novels, I'm incredibly excited to have Ready Player One adapted to this unique medium, because it allows the story to be retold visually, through a marriage of prose and stunning artwork that is also freed from the running time and licensing constraints we faced when I helped Steven Spielberg adapt my novel into his blockbuster film." He added, "I'm incredibly proud of our movie, and I truly believe we made the best possible film adaptation of my novel. And now I've been blessed enough to have lightning strike twice, because I think this is the best possible graphic novel adaptation of Ready Player One."
Ready Player One: The Graphic Novel is set to be released exclusively at Target on October 6, with a wider release at all book retailers on March 2, 2027.
