Rebecca Yarros, author of the popular Empyrean Series, is releasing a new book titled Threshing Day in two weeks, expanding the universe of her best-selling romantasy novels. While not the next main entry in the planned five-book pentology, Threshing Day will offer readers a collection of 13 short stories set in the world of Navarre and Basgiath War College, featuring beloved characters.

According to a Google Books listing, the companion novel will include stories focusing on characters such as Xaden Riorson and Brennan Sorrengail, with promises of more familiar faces making appearances. The title, Threshing Day, refers to the critical and dangerous ceremony where aspiring dragon riders attempt to bond with wild dragons, a process that often results in severe consequences for those who fail.

Yarros had initially intended for Threshing Day to be a surprise release. However, she stated in a since-deleted Facebook post that publishing industry rules prevented this, as leaks were likely to occur. She urged retailers who encountered the book before its release date not to contribute to spoilers.

The new collection of short stories offers a potential prequel element, exploring the dragon-bonding days of established characters. The Empyrean Series, which began with Fourth Wing in 2023, was followed by Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. The series is slated to conclude with two more books, though details regarding the fourth main novel remain scarce.

Yarros confirmed in January that she was actively working on the fourth book in the main series, expressing her eagerness to dive back into the world of Navarre. The popular book franchise is also undergoing an adaptation for television by Prime Video, with Michael B. Jordan serving as a producer. Meredith Averill is on board as showrunner, and Lisa Joy is attached as a producer and director for the pilot episode.
