A new mod for Red Dead Redemption 2, named enRAGE, introduces a system inspired by Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War's popular Nemesis mechanic. Developed by nicklovin99 for the PC version of the game, the mod aims to create a more dynamic and reactive world by giving non-player characters their own distinct personalities, backstories, and memories.
Unlike the disposable opponents often found in open-world games, NPCs in enRAGE can remember interactions with Arthur Morgan. Actions such as robbing, insulting, or assaulting them, or even stealing their horse, can lead to them developing a personal vendetta. This hostility can escalate over time, potentially turning into a lethal pursuit. Even if an NPC survives an encounter, they might return with visible scars or injuries, a consequence that can also affect their family members and friends, who may then seek their own revenge.
Beyond individual rivalries, the enRAGE mod also simulates a complex faction system. Eight outlaw groups and the U.S. Army are represented, each with leaders, officers, territories, and internal dynamics. These factions can develop their own rivalries and engage in conflicts independently of the player. The mod tracks these events, allowing for evolving gang wars and shifting alliances. Player actions, such as killing an officer or attacking a faction's camps or supply lines, can have significant impacts on their strength and leadership.
The mod incorporates systems for players to gather intelligence on enemy leaders and hideouts, and offers options to resolve feuds. An in-game chronicle records world events, with some occurrences even making their way into local newspapers. The creator has noted that enRAGE is in early access, and due to the complexity of its interconnected systems, players should expect potential bugs. The mod is intended for the Story Mode of Red Dead Redemption 2 and is not compatible with Red Dead Online.
