Redwall Series to Return in 2027 with New Novel "Orphans of Mossflower"

The popular Redwall fantasy novel series, created by the late Brian Jacques, is set to return with a new book titled "Orphans of Mossflower." Scheduled for release on September 7, 2027, this marks the first new entry in the series in 15 years, following "The Rogue Crew" which was published shortly after Jacques' death in 2011. The new novel will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the series, which first appeared in the UK in 1986.

A boxed set containing all 22 previous Redwall novels will also be released alongside "Orphans of Mossflower." While official plot details for the new book remain scarce, it is being advertised as written by Jacques. Fans have long speculated about a potential 23rd book, fueled by a contest held by the publisher Penguin in 2010. A winner of that contest later revealed details about a character, Reisa Kartwell, a cartographer, who did not appear in "The Rogue Crew." These details suggest the new novel may involve Redwallers needing to evacuate their home when it comes under attack, with Reisa's maps proving crucial for their journey to Salamandastron.

Previously, Patrick McHale, creator of "Over the Garden Wall," was attached to develop an adaptation of the Redwall series for Netflix, but that project was canceled earlier this year. The potential plot for "Orphans of Mossflower" suggests a direct continuation of the timeline from Jacques' later novels, which generally followed a chronological order within the Redwall universe, often featuring the iconic Redwall Abbey in Mossflower Woods.
