For over 28 years, a curious detail in the original 1998 release of Resident Evil 2 has puzzled fans: the identity of the man pictured on Jill Valentine's desk, whom the game suggests is her boyfriend. This long-standing mystery has now been resolved, with the image confirmed to be actor Kyle MacLachlan.
In the original PlayStation version of the game, players who inspected Jill's desk as either Claire Redfield or Leon S. Kennedy would trigger dialogue stating, "It's a picture of a young man. There's a good chance it's her boyfriend..." This detail, along with the photo's ambiguous nature, led to significant speculation over the decades. The confusion was further compounded when Capcom replaced the photograph with an image of a Golden Retriever in the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2.
A user named Morio, through extensive research into Japanese magazines, has successfully identified the face in the photograph. By overlaying the pixelated in-game image with promotional material of MacLachlan, a clear match was established. This discovery concludes a search that has intrigued the Resident Evil community for nearly three decades, with the mystery even having its own dedicated page on the Resident Evil Wiki.
Beyond MacLachlan, Morio's investigation also uncovered the sources for several other pictures found scattered throughout the Raccoon City Police Department in the 1998 game. These include stills featuring the main cast of Back to the Future 3, Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster from Maverick, and Winona Ryder from The Age of Innocence. As with MacLachlan's photo, these images were also altered or removed in the remake.
