Capcom's 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 has emerged as the best-selling remake across the current console generation, according to new data from market analysis firm Alinea. The study, which tracks sales from the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in November 2020 to the present day, indicates that the title has sold approximately 16.8 million copies.
PlayStation is the leading platform for the remake, accounting for 7.4 million of those sales. The Steam version follows closely with 6.8 million copies sold, while the Xbox version has sold 1.6 million units. This strong performance has translated into an estimated gross revenue of $560 million for Capcom since the game's release.
The revenue distribution mirrors the sales figures, with PlayStation contributing 53.1 percent, Steam 34.1 percent, and Xbox 12.8 percent. Alinea noted that Steam typically generates less revenue per copy due to regional pricing strategies and frequent discounts during seasonal sales. These pricing tactics have proven particularly effective in regions with lower average prices, as China, Brazil, and Russia are among the top five territories for the game's sales.
The analysis further highlights Steam's growing influence over time. While Steam accounted for 28 percent of the remake's launch day revenue, its share has increased to 34.1 percent currently. This indicates that consistent sales and regional pricing on PC have sustained momentum in markets that are less accessible through traditional console stores, which tend to offer fewer discounts and less frequent sales.
Other remakes analyzed by Alinea include Ark: Survival Ascended, with an estimated 7 million copies sold, followed by The Last of Us: Part 1 at 6.3 million, Oblivion Remastered with 4.5 million, and the Dead Space remake, which rounds out the top five with 4.3 million copies sold. The recent Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced also saw notable success, selling over 3.5 million copies within its first two weeks of release.
