Resident Evil Adaptation Becomes Zach Cregger's Highest-Grossing Film

The live-action adaptation of Capcom's 'Resident Evil' franchise has surpassed 'Weapons' to become director Zach Cregger's highest-grossing film, achieving an estimated worldwide total of $320.2 million.

The film, released on September 18, 2026, has seen a significant boost in its fourth week in theaters, driven largely by its premiere in China, which contributed $40.6 million of its weekend earnings. This success comes despite initial online negativity surrounding the film's departures from the source material, with Cregger having stated the changes were made to improve the cinematic experience. The 'Resident Evil' movie's opening weekend performance of $108.3 million was strong, and its popularity even reportedly led to an increase in sales for related video games, with the film also being recognized as the highest-rated video game adaptation to date.

In contrast, 'The Social Reckoning,' the sequel to Aaron Sorkin's 'The Social Network,' has underperformed at the box office. The film opened in seventh place globally with $9 million, earning $5.5 million domestically and $17.69 million internationally against a reported $30 million budget, marking it as a significant disappointment. This is a stark contrast to the original 'The Social Network,' which grossed $224.9 million. Critically, 'The Social Reckoning' holds a 55% score from critics and 74% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Other films performing well include 'Other Mommy,' which garnered $45.19 million globally despite poor reviews, and 'Digger,' which has grossed $35.3 million in its first two weekends.

Looking ahead, upcoming releases include the 'Street Fighter' movie and Nathan Fielder's 'You Can See Everything' on October 16, followed by DC's 'Clayface' on October 23.

IGN reviewed 'Resident Evil' with an 8/10, calling it 'Great,' while 'Other Mommy' received a 4/10 ('Bad'). 'Digger' was rated 6/10, and 'The Social Reckoning' received a 7/10.
