Over 1,000 cut voice lines discovered from the Resident Evil 4 remake and Resident Evil Requiem are offering fans a deeper look into the series' lore, character development, and inter-game narrative threads. The unearthed audio, compiled and shared by community modder Keff0, provides additional context for the characters, the infected they encounter, and even suggests a surprising connection between the Merchant in Resident Evil 4 and The Duke from Resident Evil Village.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Connections

The voice lines from the Resident Evil 4 remake delve further into the personalities of Leon, Ashley, Luis, and the enigmatic Merchant. Notably, a cut line from the Merchant directly references Resident Evil Village: "Ah, I see you're no stranger to villages. The Duke? Lad shows promise." This implies a prior awareness of The Duke, who similarly serves as a merchant and guide in that title. This connection is mirrored by The Duke himself, who previously mentioned the RE4 Merchant by quoting his signature line, "What're ya buyin?" Both characters share an almost omnipresent, omniscient, and seemingly unkillable nature, appearing unexpectedly throughout their respective games with extensive knowledge. Unused animations for the Merchant's death scene also suggest that an earlier development plan might have allowed players to kill him.

While many of Leon's cut lines are typical grunts and spider-themed quips, one particularly significant line reveals his evolving state of mind: "I promise I'll make it home." This line suggests Leon's motivation for returning to Raccoon City was not solely a mission to save Sherry or atone for past failures, but also a personal desire to leave the city's dark shadow behind and move forward with his life.

Resident Evil Requiem's Tragic Undead

Although the cut voice lines from Resident Evil Requiem do not directly link to other games in the series, they significantly expand upon the nature of the T-virus strain within that title and the tragic existence of its infected. It was previously understood that this strain allowed the infected to retain fragments of their past lives, leading to actions like scrubbing floors or singing. Players could also discern cries for help and pleas for forgiveness from the infected.

The newly discovered audio reveals an even more harrowing dimension to their suffering. Burning zombies would beg for water, and the large, mutated Chunk would express extreme stress and a fear of dying. Some infected would even convey gratitude upon being put out of their misery. These lines, though ultimately cut, would have amplified the tragic nature of the game's inhabitants, potentially evoking greater empathy from players, particularly in the case of characters like Chunk.

While the practicalities of game development limit the inclusion of all such content, these unearthed voice lines offer a valuable glimpse into the narrative and character potential explored during the development of both Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Requiem.
