Zach Cregger, director of the recent Resident Evil film adaptation, has revealed that he is already considering ideas for sequels to the franchise. Cregger's approach to the film diverges from direct game adaptations, instead focusing on the feeling of surviving a "worst-case scenario" within the Resident Evil universe. The movie follows a medical courier's perilous journey to a zombie-infested Raccoon City.
Early box office performance for the film suggests a strong opening weekend, potentially reaching between $35 million and $50 million domestically, according to Deadline. This projection significantly surpasses the global total of $41.9 million for the previous film, 2021's Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. This financial success appears to have influenced Cregger's perspective on the franchise's future.
Cregger admitted that while his initial intention was for a singular film, the completion of the movie has sparked new creative directions. "I can't help myself. This is just the way my brain works. I've already got other ideas of what could happen," he stated in an interview. However, he also indicated that his next project will be an original sci-fi film titled The Flood, slated for August 11, 2028, produced by Amblin Entertainment. Cregger described The Flood as potentially his best written work. Following that, the possibility of returning to the Resident Evil franchise remains open.
The current Resident Evil film is now playing in theaters.
