Resident Evil Mainline Story Could Conclude in Next Decade, Producer Says

Resident Evil series producer Jun Takeuchi has suggested that the main storyline of Capcom’s long-running survival horror franchise could conclude within the next ten years. This does not, however, signify an end to the production of Resident Evil games.

Takeuchi explained in a recent interview with 47 News, as reported by IGN and Yahoo Japan, that the series' narrative might reach a conclusion in the "following 10 years." This statement is tied to Capcom’s 10-year branding concept for the survival horror series, which began with the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2. Takeuchi referred to this period as the "first 10 years" of this concept, which involved extensive consideration of how to advance the series' overarching story.

"The series' story wasn't all planned out from the beginning, it expanded with each new release," Takeuchi stated. "When we were planning the Resident Evil 2 remake and coming up with the 10-year branding concept, this (the story) was what we puzzled over. If you play through all of these games, I think you'll work out the meaning behind the order of the remakes.”

The first decade of this branding initiative included the release of the Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 remakes, alongside Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The upcoming remake of Resident Evil Veronica is also part of this period. Takeuchi’s vision for the next decade encompasses both new titles and further remakes. While he did not specify the exact number of new Resident Evil games expected before 2036, he indicated that multiple titles are anticipated.

Resident Evil remains one of Capcom’s most successful multimedia franchises, with its financial reports consistently showing strong sales. Should this trend continue, Capcom is likely to continue releasing Resident Evil titles beyond 2036. Even if the main narrative arc concludes, there remains significant potential for future games and media to explore different timelines, settings, or revisit beloved characters.

Earlier this year, Resident Evil Village producer Masato Kumazawa expressed openness to the idea of a future Resident Evil game being set in Japan, a location previously featured only in the manga spin-off Biohazard Heavenly Island. "Even though Japan hasn’t appeared as a setting for the games yet, I think it might at some point in the future," Kumazawa said, adding that "There are still many things we'd like to do."
