Zach Cregger's recent film adaptation of Capcom's Resident Evil franchise has proven to be a considerable success, not only at the box office but also in driving sales for the video games that inspired it. Data compiled by Alinea Analytics indicates that following the movie's theatrical release, both the Resident Evil 2 Remake and the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 saw notable increases in sales on the PlayStation 5.
The Resident Evil 2 Remake experienced a 64% surge in PS5 sales in the week after the film premiered, while the Resident Evil 4 (2023) remake saw a 54% increase. When factoring in sales on Steam, the Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 (2023) saw additional boosts of 11% and 14%, respectively.
These sales figures translated to a significant revenue increase for both titles on PlayStation, with an 80% rise for Resident Evil 2 Remake and an 84% rise for Resident Evil 4 (2023). While Capcom had implemented price reductions for these games approximately ten days before the movie's launch, Rhys Elliot of Alinea Analytics suggests that Austin Abrams' performance as Bryan in the film played a role in further boosting engagement.
Beyond sales, the film's popularity also correlated with an increase in daily active players across several Resident Evil titles. Resident Evil 2 Remake saw the most substantial jump, with daily players increasing by 48%, from around 78,000 to approximately 116,000. This surge is particularly understandable given that Cregger's movie parallels the events of the Resident Evil 2 Remake.
Other titles also benefited from the film's success. Resident Evil 4 (2023) saw a 24% increase in active players, Resident Evil 3 Remake experienced a 25% jump, and Resident Evil Requiem recorded a 20% rise in player numbers. Resident Evil Requiem itself has recently surpassed $500 million in lifetime revenue, with a substantial 91% of its sales originating from PlayStation and Steam platforms. The game was a key driver for PlayStation and PC game sales in Japan during the first half of 2026, contributing to a 13% increase and reaching 21 million copies sold.
Capcom's strong year in releases has also included the critically acclaimed Onimusha: Way of the Sword and the innovative Pragmata. With the Code Veronica remake also on the horizon, fans have multiple new and updated Resident Evil experiences to look forward to.
