Director Zach Cregger plans to incorporate the core survival horror element of resource management into his forthcoming Resident Evil film. Cregger, who is also known for his work on "Weapons" and "Barbarian," expressed his commitment to bringing this defining aspect of the games to the cinematic experience.
"I love the resource management aspect of the games and it was really important to me to bring that to the movie," Cregger stated in a Reddit AMA. He elaborated that the film will make players acutely aware of the protagonist Bryan's dwindling supplies, detailing how his ammo count will be visible and how missed shots will carry narrative weight.
This focus on scarcity extends beyond ammunition. Cregger intends to highlight Bryan's health status, noting that "it's another way to utilize the game mechanic that heightens the narrative engine of the movie." Potential implementations discussed include visual cues like a classic video game limp or screen effects mirroring a character's deteriorating health, such as a red hue to vision accompanied by a rapid heartbeat sound. The film is also expected to feature first-person point-of-view sequences, a mechanic seen in more recent Resident Evil titles.
Cregger also expressed a desire to translate the tactile challenge of inventory management, comparing it to a "twisted game of Tetris" where players must carefully organize their limited space. The film may also mirror in-game discoveries, such as finding specific items that replenish crucial resources. The approach aims to replicate the tension and strategic decision-making that have long been hallmarks of the Resident Evil franchise.
