Resident Evil's executive producer Jun Takeuchi has offered an explanation for the title of the latest installment, Resident Evil Requiem, but the intricate reasoning has left some, including the author of this piece, unconvinced. The franchise, which notably eschewed Roman numerals for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village, continued its naming convention trend with Requiem, seemingly omitting a numerical designation altogether.
While the name Requiem itself carries connotations of prayer for the deceased or remembrance, a promotional image that subtly incorporated the letter 'q' from Requiem to represent the number nine offered a potential visual tie-in. However, Takeuchi has elaborated on the title's significance in comments made to Japanese press during Resident Evil's 30th anniversary.
According to Takeuchi, the title 'Requiem' is not solely chosen for its literal meaning. He revealed that the spelling of the word (REQUIEM) contains not only 'RE' for 'response' but also a 'Q' for 'question.' This suggests that 'Requiem' is intended to present both an 'answer' and a 'question,' with Takeuchi promising further explanation at a future date.
This interpretation has been met with skepticism, drawing comparisons to overly analytical literary interpretations. Despite the reservations, the prospect of future revelations about the full meaning behind 'Requiem' does spark curiosity, leaving open the possibility for further, perhaps more satisfying, explanations regarding the title's complete significance.
