Resident Evil Requiem has surpassed $500 million in revenue, continuing Capcom's successful run with the horror franchise. According to estimates from Alinea Analytics, the ninth mainline title in the series is outperforming previous Resident Evil games and is approaching the lifetime earnings of Resident Evil 4's remake, which has reportedly grossed over $600 million in three years.
The PlayStation 5 is the most popular platform for Resident Evil Requiem, accounting for a significant portion of its sales. Approximately 30% of the 4 million copies sold on PS5 are physical, despite the industry trend towards digital distribution and Sony's move toward disc-less console options.
While the new Resident Evil film, directed by Zach Cregger, achieved a series-best opening weekend with over $108 million worldwide, its impact on game sales for Resident Evil Requiem was less pronounced than Capcom's frequent discounts. In fact, Capcom began offering discounts on several Resident Evil titles eight days before the film's release. During the film's opening weekend, Resident Evil Requiem saw a slight decrease in daily revenue on PS5, with daily earnings dropping from approximately $284,000 to $271,000, as the modest increase in demand did not offset the reduced price point.
The film did, however, lead to a general increase in player counts across the Resident Evil series. The remake of Resident Evil 2 saw the most significant boost, with a 48% increase in players across all platforms, attributed to its Raccoon City setting and overall quality. Resident Evil 3's remake experienced a 25% rise in player engagement.
